What are Catalinas or Catalina Coupons?
Catalina offers, Catalina coupons, Catalinas or just Cats can used to describe coupons that you print after you checkout and pay for certain deals.
Catalinas print out of the Catalina machine located next to the register. The coupons typically looks similar to the ones in the above picture.
There are certain deals that generate Catalina coupons, these are typically advertised by the store on the price tags next to the products. The tags can look something like this:
In the photo above (at Kroger) the tag specifies it as a Checkout Coupon = Catalina coupon).
Often the Catalina machine also prints out a “preview” or a “coming attractions” warning for you for a new promotion that is about to start.
TIP: Keep an eye out on the Catalina machine when you shop. 🙂
ON YOUR NEXT PURCHASE
Catalinas CANNOT be used in the transaction they are received.
They are what is called OYNO (on your next order), meaning you can use the Catalina you receive, on your next purchase/shopping trip or later.
Catalinas print with an expiration date. It’s typically about 2 weeks out. Make sure to keep track when the Catalinas expire and use them before they do. Stores do not accept expired Catalinas.

There are over 50,000 stores that belong to the Catalina marketing network including Kroger, Albertsons, Walgreens, Safeway etc.
What types of coupons are Catalinas?
Catalinas are usually manufacturer coupons and as such cannot be combined with other manufacturer’s coupons for one single item.

Catalina Coupon Tips
Buy the number of items specified to print the Catalina
For example: buy two and receive a $2.00 Catalina. If you buy more than two on the same transaction, you will still only get a $2.00 Catalina (most of the time, there are some exceptions where you can receive several in one transaction)
If you want to buy, say 4, you usually need to do two separate transactions, to get the $2.00 Catalina coupon to print twice.
Catalinas count as coupons
When you want to use a Catalina, keep in mind it counts as a coupon towards your total number of coupons. Why is this important? Because some stores do not allow you to have more coupons than items – for example Walgreens.
What do I mean?
You purchase 4 items and have 4 coupons – a coupon for each of them. Using a Catalina coupon in addition to this, would make your coupon total 5: One more coupon than you have items. The register will beep and you won’t be able to use it. This is where filler items come into play.
Filler item: a cheap item you purchase – without a coupon – so you can use your Catalina coupon.
Wait for it!
The Catalinas print after you pay! There may be a few second delay. Wait for them to print. Sometimes the cashier may not know a Catalina will print so keep an eye out.
When the Catalina doesn’t print and it’s supposed to
There are a few reasons why the Catalina may not print:
- The Catalina machine is not working: out of paper etc.
- You don’t have the correct quantity, amount or product.
- You are using a Catalina to pay for the same product (second time around) that you received to the Catalina for
e.g. Bought 4 Powerbars yesterday and received $2 Catalina. Today you are buying 4 more Powerbars and use the Catalina from yesterday.
TIP: If you go through a self checkout and are expecting a Catalina to print, make sure you go to a register that has a working Catalina machine! If there are lights (red lights) blinking in the machine when it’s out of order. If it’s out of order you will not receive a Catalina.
Help! The Catalina didn’t print!!
If your Catalina did not print, there are a couple of things you can do:
- Ask a manager/cashier. They may be able to give you money back, points to your account etc. depending on the store/manager/situation. They cannot make the Catalina generate a new coupon.
- Call Catalina Marketing: 1-888-8COUPON (888-826-8766), or click here to submit a ticket for support within 14 days of your transaction.
